Hi everyone!
I’ve been looking for patterns everywhere recently, and I can’t stop drawing patterns. It’s so much fun that I think I’m going to start dedicating a weekly newsletter to patterns. What do you think?
A great place to find pattern inspiration is in the end pages of picture books! So that’s what we’ll be studying today. End pages with patterns, but also end pages that cleverly hint at the story, use color to draw in the reader, and are designed beautifully.
Does anyone else treat end pages like a treat? When I flip open the first end page, I look for clues about the story. Then I flip to the back end page to see if it’s the same or different. If it’s different, I get so excited! I like seeing changes in color, characters, the setting, etc… because that gives clues about the story.
The first end page is a great place to hint at the story before the book actually begins. The back end page can act as an epilogue of sorts. It can wrap up or extend the final page of the story. It’s the last chance to add a little bit extra before closing the book and putting it back on the shelf until next time.
So let’s study how some published books use end pages in really cool, beautiful, or clever ways.
Grab a cup of coffee or tea, and enjoy scrolling through the following images. I hope you find something that speaks to you. Or bookmark this post and return to it when you’re creating end pages in your next book project. Maybe it’ll provide some inspiration!
