I was recently asked how I grew my greeting card business. The question was mostly geared at: How do you expand sales beyond friends and family?

Here’s the short answer for my business: start selling wholesale.

I definitely receive orders from people I don’t know, but the majority of my direct-to-consumer sales are still from friends and family. My online shop launched in September 2021, so it’s been just over 1.5 years. By selling wholesale, I can reach a much wider consumer base.

Time out! What’s direct-to-consumer versus wholesale?

  • Direct-to-consumer: When goods are sold directly from you, the artist, to the consumer. Examples: You sell cards on Etsy, your own website, or at a local market. You price the cards at retail cost, such as $5.50 each.
